Formal Session of the Senate of TUL and Conferment of the Doctor Honoris Causa Title on Roberta Metsola

The Rector and the Senate of Lodz University of Technology have the honor to invite you to the ceremony of conferring the title of Doctor Honoris Causa on Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament. The event will take place on Friday, June 20th at 12:30 p.m. in Alchemium.

Roberta Metsola was born on January 18, 1979, in St. Julian’s, Malta. She graduated from the University of Malta and the College of Europe in Bruges. She holds a doctorate in law and specializes in international law.

Since the beginning of her studies, she has been involved with numerous organizations, such as European Democrat Students, the European Youth Forum, and the Permanent Representation of Malta to the European Union. She has also served as an advisor in law to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

In 2013, she was first elected to the European Parliament as a representative of Malta’s Nationalist Party. In 2020, she became the First Vice-President of the European Parliament. Since 2022, she has been the President of the European Parliament. At the time of her election, she was the youngest person in history to hold this position. She was re-elected as President in July 2024, receiving the support of a significant majority of MEPs. Her election was seen as a signal of renewal and openness of European institutions to younger generations and an emphasis on gender equality.

As President of the European Parliament, she is committed to defending the rule of law, combating discrimination, and promoting European values. She is also an advocate for policies that promote greater social justice, including strengthening the role of women and social protection.

The European Parliament’s policy under Roberta Metsola’s leadership is inclusive, committed to further enlargement of the European Union, and based on active diplomacy. The President herself strongly supports the rule of law, democracy, human rights, and the fight against disinformation and extremism. She has very firmly stood on the side of Ukraine attacked by Russia in 2022. She is an advocate of support for the attacked country and a tougher stance towards the aggressor.

For this engagement, she has been awarded the Ukrainian Order of Merit, 1st Class, and the Order of Princess Olga, 1st Class. She has received the Cross of Good Neighbourhood awarded by the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus, the Grand Cross

of the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas in Lithuania, and the Commander’s Cross of the Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria.

Roberta Metsola has received honorary doctorates from the University of Lisbon and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
